Mexican oregano (Latin name lippia graveolens) is a species of flowering plant in the verbena family, native to Mexico, the southwestern US and parts of Central America.

Although they share a name, Mexican oregano is a completely different species of plant than the "true" oregano common in Italian and Mediterranean cuisines (which are part of the mint family). While Mexican oregano has some similar aromatic notes, its flavor is brighter, with citrusy-floral notes and a hint of anise.

How to cook with Mexican Oregano:

  • Sprinkle over chicken, steak, veggies or mushrooms before cooking, along with salt and pepper, for a simple seasoning

  • Add herbal flavor to soups and stews by stirring it in toward the beginning of cooking

  • Use it in enchilada sauces, moles and salsas

  • Saute in oil with onions and garlic before adding greens or other vegetables to the pan

  • Lightly crush it with a mortar and pestle or in the palm of your hand before using, to release the maximum flavor
