The best sweet treat at lunchtime is a piece of fresh fruit! But if you want something special, applesauce is a nice treat. And when you make it yourself, you’ll know it has no extra sugar, artificial colors or preservatives. Only good stuff!
½ cup of water
4 short cinnamon sticks, or 2 long ones broken in half (optional)
5 medium-sized flavorful apples, cut into chunks with the skin on (click here to learn how to do this)
We like to leave the skin on to make applesauce. That way it still has the nutrients and fiber of a whole apple. Plus, depending on the color of the apple skin, your finished applesauce may even look a little pink at the end!
1. Put the water in a medium-sized pot and add the cinnamon sticks if you want your applesauce to have a cinnamon flavor (we think this is yummy).
2. Put the lid on firmly and put the pot on the stove over medium-high heat.
3. Watch for steam! When you see whisps of steam escaping from the lid, you will know the water is boiling.
4. When the water is boiling, add the apples and turn the heat down to medium.
5. Let the pot simmer for 30 minutes with the lid slightly askew (see picture), enough to allow just a bit of steam to escape, but not too much.
6. After 30 minutes, carefully use a fork to test whether the apples are easily smashed. If so, they’re done! If not, allow them to simmer longer, checking them every 10 minutes or so. Do not allow the pot to dry out. If the apples begin to stick to the bottom of the pan, add another splash of water.
7. When the apples are done, remove the cinnamon sticks and carefully pour the apples into a blender. Hold the lid askew over the top of the blender and turn it on. (Important: never blend anything hot with the lid on securely! Steam pressure will build up and the top can explode off.) Blend the apples thoroughly into applesauce.
8. Your Homemade Applesauce is ready! Store it in the refrigerator, or eat it right away for a warm applesauce treat.
